Cape Town and the Winelands, day and night

SA Home Doctor: doctor visits in South Africa, starting in Cape Town

A doctor at your home, holiday rental or hotel, day and night

  • Doctors registered with the HPCSA
  • Consultations in English and Afrikaans

The doctor tells you the fee before coming. Nothing is arranged until you agree, and nothing is charged on this website.

On WhatsApp, an automated assistant first asks a few questions, such as where you are, who the visit is for and whether you need a doctor now or later. Then a doctor who covers your area calls you. No South African SIM card is needed.

Important: Medical emergency? Call an ambulance.

Call 10177 Call 112 from a mobile

SA Home Doctor is not an emergency service. Do not wait for a home visit. When to call 10177 or 112 instead

Without emergency warning signs, a home visit suits illness or injury that is not life-threatening, such as a fever that will not settle, a stomach bug, an earache or a sprained ankle.

What to expect

When you ask for a doctor

Arrival
Our target is 30 minutes to 1 hour in the Cape Town areas on our list. It is a target, not yet a measured average. The doctor gives you an arrival time when calling.
If no doctor is free
We tell you so instead of leaving you waiting, offer to try again later, and remind you of the emergency numbers.
Hotels and rentals
A doctor can see you in your hotel room, guesthouse or holiday rental. Give us the property name and your room or unit number. In a hotel, once the visit is agreed, let reception know a doctor is on the way.
Visiting from abroad
Write to us from your usual number: WhatsApp works without a South African SIM card.

What the doctor can do during the visit

  • Examine you and explain what he or she found.
  • Take care of a wound and dress it, when he or she judges it appropriate.
  • Give you a drip, only after assessing you and only if he or she judges it the right treatment. About IV therapy
  • Take a blood sample for a pathology laboratory. The results come back to you from the doctor. About blood tests at home
  • Complete your airline's medical form or write a letter, if the examination supports it. The airline decides. About fit-to-fly certificates
  • Write a prescription, a referral letter or a medical certificate, when he or she judges you need one.

The doctor decides what is needed after examining you.

How it works

We arrange visits by independent doctors registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Cape Town comes first. Consultations are in English and Afrikaans, and the doctor tells you the fee before setting off.

  1. You send a request

Write to us on WhatsApp. We ask where you are staying, how to reach you and whether the visit is for an adult or a child. You explain your symptoms to the doctor, who calls you.

  2. A doctor calls you

The request goes to the doctors who cover your area. The one who accepts calls you, gives you his or her name and HPCSA registration number, and tells you the fee. Nothing is arranged until you agree.

  3. The visit

The doctor comes to you, examines you and explains what he or she found. You pay the doctor directly and receive an invoice with the doctor's practice number to submit to your medical aid or travel insurer.

No. In a medical emergency, call 10177 for an ambulance, or 112 from a mobile phone. Do not wait for a home visit.
